When To Kill A Monster

If you had to kill a monster, would you do it while it was tiny or wait until it towered over you?  I always get the same answer to this question – the best time is when it’s tiny, of course!  So true. Then why are you feeding your monster?

We all have little monsters in our lives.

My little monster appeared after signing up for a certification training course. I started the session with high energy and excitement. Unexpectedly my life became busier than planned, filling my calendar with new priorities.

The initial course reminders were helpful but turned into a frustrating nuisance quickly. Sure, I had that nagging feeling of needing to continue (which I ignored), and yes, I did take (admittedly half-hearted) initiatives to get things done.

When do you put things off again and again?

When I received the email with the ultimatum to either complete the course or else re-start, I could feel that the tiny little monster had grown and now towered over me.

Entrepreneurs sometimes do not like to manage numbers and are surprised to find themselves in trouble with their taxes. Busy people find themselves overweight and unhealthy, struggling with health issues. Long-term relationships end, seemingly out of nowhere.

Where are you feeding your little monster?

Here are some clues to help you find find it:

  • What conversations are you putting off?
  • What actions are you not taking?
  • What decisions are you delaying?
  • What nagging feeling are you ignoring?

The longer you take to address challenges in your life, the bigger they will become. So squash it, crush it, kick it out the door. You do not have it do it alone. Ask a friend, colleague, or family member for help or reach out to me.

The question is: what will YOU do next with your little monster?
It might feel scary or uncertain, but I know you can do it.
